More than brains and more than spines, the team at Kalra Brain & Spine takes great pride in delivering the most up-to-date, evidence-based, comprehensive neurosurgical care out there. Dr. Kalra is a specialist in both the brain and the spine, so his expertise gives him a hard-to-beat understanding of how nerves interact with the rest of the body. With this foundation, we treat all neurosurgical conditions involving the brain, spine and peripheral nerves.

Helping you find relief from pain is the most important work we do. We are committed to exploring every treatment option and finding the treatments that will work best for your unique body and your unique life. Treatment plans are often multidisciplinary and directed toward nonoperative management of your condition, including physical therapy, injections and lifestyle modifications. While we see successful surgical outcomes each and every day, surgery is always treated as a last resort.

What is a Cervical Spine Center?

If you have been a patient at KBS for any amount of time, then you know we treat our patients like the neighbors, friends and family they are! Our goal is to get to know you, treat your symptoms and help you recover as fast as possible. So you can live life the way you want to live it.

When neck pain is a concern, we have found that a second opinion may save you from a cervical fusion. For this reason, we dedicate a significant portion of our practice to rendering second (and even third!) opinions for people seeking relief from debilitating pain.

Our Cervical Spine Center has the latest diagnostic and treatment tools—including the innovative Mobi-C® artificial disc that may be an option rather than a cervical fusion when surgical intervention is indicated.

Dr. Kalra was one of the first physicians trained in implanting the Mobi-C® artificial disc when it became approved by insurance companies. He strongly believes that patients who desire a minimally invasive surgery with minimal down-time and don’t want to be burdened and restricted with a cervical collar should consider cervical arthroplasty (artificial disc insertion) instead of a fusion. This option preserves the natural motion of the neck and substantially decreases the risk of another neck surgery down the road.

More about the Revelational Mobi-C® Cervical Disc

Mobi-C is an FDA-approved artificial disc designed to maintain neck motion. Mobi-C Cervical Disc is one of the most widely used cervical discs in the world. It has been implanted in more than 75,000 spines in 25 countries.

A total of 599 patients were involved in the Mobi-C U.S. clinical trial, which represents the largest concurrent clinical trial ever conducted for cervical disc replacement. Mobi-C received FDA approval in August of 2013.

How Mobi-C Works

Mobi-C contains patented mobile bearing technology that allows the polyethylene core to slide and rotate inside the disc for self-adjustment to the cervical spine movements. In real-life terms, this means that Mobi-C can react and adjust to the normal motion of your spine. Additionally, Mobi-C provides bone-sparing fixation, meaning the device is able to be fixed in place without the need for chisel cuts into the small vertebral bodies of the cervical spine.

It sounds complex and scientific (and it is!), but for most patients, we had them at “substantially decreases the risk of another neck surgery down the road”. That great benefit, coupled with the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, makes this advancement a desirable option for many patients.

If you’re interested in seeing if the Mobi-C could be right for you, schedule an appointment to consult with Dr. Kalra at our Cervical Spine Center.
